# Orthodontic care and general dental care have different roles

An orthodontic review focuses on movement, alignment and bite\. A general dental examination and cleaning address wider dental health\. The AAO explains that an orthodontic visit does not replace those dental visits, even while a person is wearing braces\.

### Movement planning is one part of oral care

The orthodontic team evaluates tooth movement, alignment, bite and related treatment goals\. General dental care includes dental examinations, cleaning, cavities and gum health\. Those purposes can be relevant at the same time, rather than taking turns as if one appointment covers everything\.

This distinction also helps explain what a progress appointment means\. A review of how braces treatment is developing should not automatically be counted as a general dental examination or cleaning\. The name of the appointment and the provider's actual explanation matter\.

Care purposes are explained without assigning an examination or cleaning frequency\.

### Existing dental information can matter to the movement plan

The AAO describes existing fillings, missing teeth and dental conditions as adult treatment considerations\. It also describes circumstances in which the orthodontist, general dentist and other specialists may coordinate care\.

Coordination is a relationship to clarify in the actual plan\. It does not follow that every dental service is provided by the same practice or included in the braces estimate\. A useful explanation identifies which provider is responsible for a particular part of care and which information they need\.

No personal sequencing or clinic coordination package is established\.

### A fictional role map separates clinical work from communication

In this fictional map, a person receiving care reports relevant dental history and explains anything they did not understand\. The orthodontic team explains the movement plan\. The general dentist's examination and cleaning remain their own care activities\.

The map is useful because it assigns a purpose to each line without claiming the providers have already exchanged information\. If the actual plan needs a handoff, its agreed responsibility and status need to be explicit\. A place on a chart is not evidence that the care or handoff happened\.

Fictional care\-role map

| Role | Purpose in this example | Separate question to settle in the actual plan |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Orthodontic team | Explain and review the planned movement | Which review and communication arrangements apply? |
| General dentist | Provide general dental examination and cleaning | What care has that provider actually recommended? |
| Person receiving care | Share history and clarify the explanations received | Who needs the information, and has the agreed handoff occurred? |

This is a fictional role explanation, not a clinic workflow or completed referral\.
