Braces spacers and separators

What are they for?

Separators are elastic rings or small wire loops between teeth, making room for planned orthodontic bands.

A band is a metal ring, usually on a back tooth. The archwire moves teeth.

Knowing a component’s name is a start. Understanding the purpose your clinician has supplied connects that name to your own explanation.

One explanation, understood together

This conversation is fictional. The clinician supplies the purpose; the family explains what they understood.

Clinician: “Your separator makes room for the band in your plan.”

Teen: “The separator makes room for my band. The wire has the tooth-moving job.”

Guardian: “I understand that room-making purpose. Optional communication help isn’t choosing the appliance or its directions.”

The teen’s explanation matters in its own right. A parent or guardian can help communicate if that support is wanted, without taking over the teen’s voice.

For questions about your own appliance or its instructions, contact your treating orthodontic team through your existing care arrangements.
